In German and English. No Spanish to be found exept of the headline.

Im Sinne des Dalai Lamas „Gehe einmal im Jahr dorthin, wo du noch niemals warst“ (ich interpretiere „dorthin“ als Land) bin ich Anfang sowohl Ende Mai nach Spanien gereist. Wie, noch nie da gewesen? Jupp, obwohl ich mein ganzes Leben bis natürlich auf meine Reisen in Europa verbracht habe, bin ich unabsichtlich noch nie in den sonnigen Teil des Kontinents gereist. Soweit so gut. Um das zu ändern habe ich beschlossen, mir gleich zwei (wahrscheinlich) sehr unterschiedliche Regionen des Landes anzuschauen: Andalusien und Barcelona.

Following Dalai Lamas „Once a year, go some place you’ve never been before“ (interpreting „place“ as country), I decided to travel to Spain early as well as late May. So yes, I’ve never made it to Spain before though having spent my entire life in Europe (except of my international travel of course). Actually there was no intention not to travel to the sunniest part of Europe (is it?), just coincidence that my way didn’t guide me there yet. So in order to change that, I picked 2 probably very different ergions / cities of Spain: Andalucia and Barcelona.

Per Autorundreise in der südspanischen Region ist man selbst innerhalb einer Woche in der Lage, sich einige Städte anzuschauen. Durch einen Zwischenstopp in Madrid für ein paar Stunden war auch die spanische Hauptstadt mit im Programm wo ich mich durch einige Markthallen gegessen habe um dann rechtzeitig vor dem Champions League Spiel von Real gegen Manchester City wieder im Flieger Richtung Küste zu sitzen. Trotzdem bekam ich hier schonmal einen Einblick in die Sprache, etwas Kultur und vor allem: das Essen.

By exploring the region by rental car, one can see quite a few cities even within one week’s time. With a layover of about 7 hours in Madrid I also managed to see the spanish capitol: Eating through some food markets to be back in the plane just in time before the Champions League semi final Real vs. Man City. However, I managed to get a first idea about the language, culture and last but definitly not least: the food.

Nach der Landung in Malaga und den anfänglichen Schwierigkeiten, den Mietwagenanbieter zu finden (tja, das ist nun mal der Nachteil bei Low-Budget anti Sixt / Hertz) stellte sich heraus, dass dieser 3 km vom Flughafen entfernt seine Geschäfte betreibt. Sogleich ging es mit dem Wagen Richtung Granada weiter, was die Erkenntnis mit sich brachte, dass das kostenlose Handynavi zwar überall hinführt, allerdings selten Einbahnstraßen als solche anzeigt. Früh am nächsten Morgen stand dann die Alhambra auf dem Programm und trotz stark bewölktem Himmel regnete es glücklicherweise nur kurz. Ich bin mir bewusst, dass die Alhambra ein Tourimagnet ist, aber ja, man muss das echt mal gesehen haben (allerdings: Unbedingt Karten online kaufen!). Ohne dass ich je in Nordafrika war, stellte ich mir das so oder so ähnlich vor (zumindest Marokko) unter dem Einfluss der Mauren. Wunderschön.

After arriving in Malaga and successfully meeting the challenges of finding the low budget car rental company that I booked a car with, it seemed that they ran their business from t 3 kms away from the airport. After picking up the car I made my way to Granada immediately while figuring out that my free mobile nagivation app was actually quite good but didn’t display one-way streets properly. Still, I made it to Alhambra early next morning. Despite the cloudy sky, there was fortunately only a bit of rain that morning. I am aware that the Alhambra is very touristic place (which I usually try to avoid) but well, you definitly have to go there when you’re in that region (but PLEASE buy your tickets online in advance, will make your day!). Without ever having traveled to northern Africa, this might be similar (at least to Morocco) with the Moors influence. Really gorgeous.

Nächste Station war Córdoba, was ich trotz einigen zusätzlichen Kilometern Strecke wärmstens empfehlen kann. Kulinarische Highlights extrem günstig, eine wunderschöne süße Altstadt und die Mezquita-Moschee beeindruckt.

Next destination was Córdoba which I can highly recommend even when having to drive some additional hours to get there. Great cheap Tapas, a beautiful very historic city centre and the Mezquita mosque impressed me a lot.

Weiterer Pluspunkt: Das Hotel war zwar das Teuerste auf dieser Reise, hat sich aber mehr als gelohnt! Hier haben die Bilder nicht enttäuscht und ich kann es mit bestem Gewissen empfehlen: Palacio del Corregidor in der Calle Sánchez Pena. Beste und günstigste Tapas auf der ganzen Reise: Ein unscheinbares Restaurant in der Calle Enrique Romero Torres genannt Restaurante Museo de la Tapa y el Vino.

Additonal plus: the hotel being the most expensive one on my trip, it was totally worth it! Pictures on the booking website were 100% authentic and again, I can highly recommend it to you: Palacio del Corregidor in Calle Sánchez Pena. Best and cheapest Tapas in the whole week: A small restaurant located in Calle Enrique Romero Torres called Restaurante Museo de la Tapa y el Vino.

Sevilla und Cadiz, die nächsten Stationen der Reise, haben mich persönlich nicht  überzeugt: Sevilla war mir irgendwie zu voll, wobei die Kathedrale zu beeindrucken wusste und eine Flamenco-Vorstellung doch recht spannend war (mir war nicht bewusst, dass das ja irgendwie Klagelieder sind…) und in Cadiz hatten wir leider so schlechtes Wetter, dass Rausgehen zwangsläufig mit nass werden verbunden war. Dafür habe ich dort mein allererstes Upgrade auf eine Suite erhalten und eigentlich ist Dauerregen in einer Whirlpool-Badewanne mit Dachfenster oder im Himmelbett mit einem guten Sherry gar nicht so schlecht.

Sevilla and Cadiz, the next 2 stops on the itinerary didn’t impress me that much (just personal pov). Sevilla was really crowded whereas the cathedral was nice to take a look at (outside and inside). Also I attended a Flamenco show which was quite cool (it didn’t occur to me that the Flamenco is a rather kind of sad thing) and in Cadiz, the weather conditions turned so bad that the meaning of going outside was the same as getting soaked. Still, I reserved my very first upgrade from a standard room to a suite and constant rain is not so bad when lying in a whirpool bathtub with a roof window or in a four poster bed accompanied by a good Sherry.

 

In El Puerto de Santa Maria am Santa Catalina Beach, quasi die Antwort des spanischen Festlandes auf die vorgelagerte, nur durch Brücken angeschlossene Insel Cadiz, konnte ich dann einen Geburstags-Strandaufenthalt verbringen – zumindest für etwa eine Stunde, bis der Himmel einmal mehr meinte, zu zeigen dass es in Andalusien auch nass werden kann. Ich hatte mit Musik und lustigen Fotos trotzdem meinen Spaß.

In El Puerto de Santa Maria at Santa Catalina Beach which is actually the response of mainland Spain to the seperated-only-connected-by-bridges island Cadiz I spent quality birthday time at the beach. Ok, just for an hour until the sky was of the opinion to show that Andalucia can also get really wet. But I had a really good time with my playlist and funny photos.

Über Marbella ging es schließlich zurück nach Malaga und hey, endlich war das Wetter dann mal so wie man es von Südspanien erwartet hatte oder zumindest wie ich das in meiner Naivität angenommen hatte. Und sowohl Marbella (obere Bilderreihe im nächsen Bilderblock) als auch Malaga (Bilder unten) waren überraschend nett. Nach einem netten warmen Abend in Malaga ging es schließlich über Tapas und Fino nach Hause und es ist irgendwie traurig, dass es sowohl sehr viel weniger Kreisel als auch deutlich weniger Sherry in Deutschland gibt.

Via Marbella I got back to Malaga and finally the weather was like I expected it to be in southern of Spain (maybe I’ve been to naive?). And Marbella (upper picture row) as well as Malaga (lower pictures) were surprisingly nice locations. After a final nice warm evening in Malaga via Tapas and Fino, I returned home and it’s really sad that there are significantly less roundabouts as well as Sherry in Germany.

 

Fazit: Ich würde wieder dorthin reisen, mich allerdings bei einer zweiten Tour auf die Route Malaga – Granada – Córdoba festlegen (plus eventuell ein paar Tage in Marbella am Strand), um die Beziehung zu den süßen kleinen Altstädten, leckeren Tapas und günstigen Finos zu festigen. Und was denkst Du? Was ist Dein Geheimtipp in der Region oder lohnen sich andere Ziele in Spanien?

Conclusion: I’d definitly go there again but intend to focus on the cities Malaga, Granada and Córdoba (with additional beach days in Marbella maybe) to work on my relationship to super-cute old towns, tasty Tapas and cheap Finos.
