Ich weiß nicht genau, meine wievielte Reise nach UK das jetzt war, aber ich durfte herausfinden dass man 14 Tage dort locker auch ohne einen Besuch in der Hauptstadt verbringen kann. Ich habe 8 Tage im wunderbaren Schottland verbracht und die restlichen 6 Tage an Südküste Englands (Torbay, Devon). Aufgrund der vielen genialen Bilder (diese Motive kann selbst ich nicht versauen) habe ich beschlossen, zwei Posts daraus zu machen – und dies ist der erste Teil. Achso und es war meine erste längere Tour als Solo Traveller was ich überraschenderweise sehr genossen habe.

Honestly, I’m not that sure how many times I’ve travelled to the UK by now but I was fortunate enough to realize that one can easily spend 2 weeks without visiting the capital. So I stayed in magnificent Scotland for 8 days and 6 more days in pretty Torquay, Devon in the south of England. Due to the many great pictures (even I couldn’t ruin those motives) I decided to make 2 blog posts out if it (you’re currently reading the first part). In addition this was my first longer trip as solo traveller which I surpringsly enjoyed a lot.

Gestartet bin ich mit einem halben Tag in Edinburgh, was selbst im Regen der absolute Wahnsinn ist. Dazu muss man sagen, dass es immer nur Sprühregen oder Nieselregen war und in der Regel auch maximal eine Stunde. Meine Regenhose jedenfalls, extra für den Trip erstanden, fühlte sich vernachlässigt da noch nicht mal ausgepackt. Den Einsatz hat dann der Regenschirm übernommen, der teilweise dann auch mal Extraschichten fahren musste. Dafür habe ich noch eine neue Erfahrung gesammelt und bin zu einem Couchsurfing Meeting gegangen, um mal mit Locals ins Gespräch zu kommen und es hat wirklich funktioniert. Werde ich nun öfter tun auf meinen Reisen.

I’ve started my tour with a half day in Edinburgh which is amazing even in the rain. Whereas I have to add that most of the time it’s drizzling rain for maximum of an hour so I was really doing fine. My rain trousers felt a little lonely as I didn’t need them at all. But the one thing I needed was really my umbrella (never go to the UK without one!!) And I made another experience which was joing a Courchsurfer meeting to get in touch with some locals that worked out perfectly. I will continue to do that on my future travels.

Früh am nächsten Morgen ging es dann ab in die Highlands inklusive Isle of Skye und Loch Ness mit Haggis Adventures. Eigentlich lege ich Wert auf größtmögliche Freiheit, auch und vor allem beim Reisen, aber Auto mieten oder alles per Bus zu machen war mir dann doch zu blöd. Also dann 3-Tages-Bustour als Alleinreisende im Mehrbettzimmer. Und was soll ich sagen, es war echt cool. Abgesehen von neuen Facebookfreunden in USA und Australien hat es mir echt gut getan, auch mal wieder im Mehrbettzimmer zu schlafen und zack ist das Einzelzimmer mit eigenem Bad, was eine Woche später folgte, der größte Luxus überhaupt. Und was soll ich sagen… Schottland ist so unglaublich wunderschön, selbst mit grauem Himmel und Regen, hätte ich nicht gedacht, dass es sowas überhaupt gibt.

Early next morning, I made my way into the Highlands including Isle of Skye and Loch Ness with Haggis Adventure company. Actually I really appreciate my personal freedom, also and especially while travelling but renting a car or going by public transport seemed a little bit too expensive or annoying. So I prefered to go on a 3-day-bustour als solo traveller in a dorm. And hell yeah, it was really cool. Despite of new facebook friends in the US and Australia, it was a good thing for me to sleep in a dorm for my private room with ensuite bathroom which I booked for the following week became the ultimate luxury. What else to tell… Scotland is really magnificent even in the rain; I didn’t expect something like this to be existing in our amazing world.

Nach zwei weiteren Tagen mit einem guten Freund von mir in Edinburgh sind wir dann weiter nach Glasgow gereist, um dort noch ein paar Tage zu verbringen. Und was soll ich sagen, wir hatten tatsächlich einen Sonntag im wunderbaren Edinburgh (inklusive leichtem Sonnenbrand – aber hey, Sonnenbrand aus Schottland hat irgendwie Stil). Auch Glasgow hat mich sehr positiv überrascht, sehr chice Innenstadt inkl. einer Tardis und frittiertem Marsriegel (Spezialität der schottischen Küche). Echt lecker!

After two more days with a good friend of mine in Edinburgh, we made our way to Glasgow to spend a few more days there. Finally, we were lucky and had great sunny hours in Edinburgh (including minor sunburn but hey, sunburn from Scotland is really cool actually, isn’t it?). To my suprise, Glasgow was also really nice with a lovely city center with a Tardis and deep fried Mars bar (local culinary specialty). So yummy!

 

Weitere Learnings: In UK funktioniert nicht immer alles unbedingt so, wie man es als Festland-Europäer gewohnt ist. Da wäre beispielsweise des Wasserkocher, der aufgrund seiner Konstruktion eine Mindestmenge an Wasser beinhalten muss. Führt dazu, dass die Hotelbetreiber die immer halb gefüllt haben, was bei dem gemeinen Gast leichte Ekelreaktionen hervorruft weil das Wasser wirkt, als hätte es schon vor mehreren Tagen die Leitung verlassen. Auch spannend: In UK werden alle Arbeiten (Bauarbeiten, Mülleimer leeren, im Museum etc.) immer von zwei Arbeitern erledigt. Da könnte man meinen, ineffiziente Strukturen identifiziert zu haben, wären da nicht die self-checkouts bei Tesco und Sainsbury’s Supermärkten, die statt 10 Kassierern einen Aufpasser ermöglichen. Funfact Nummer 3: Zwar nutzt man sowohl in Schottland als auch in England das britische Pfund, allerdings werden ausgebene Scheine von zB der Bank of Scotland nicht unbedingt in England angenommen, da Unsicherheit darüber herrscht, ob das wirklich echte Scheine sind. Also alle schottischen Scheine besser in Schottland ausgeben!

Lessons Learned: Some things do not work like we’re used to in Europe. For example the kettle is constructed in a rather strange way so it requires a minmum quantity of water. For that, all hotels have filled them up which leads to aversion for the general hotel guest because the water seems to have already spend a few days in the kettle. Also lots of jobs in the UK (like construction works, rubbish collection or museum guards) are always done by 2 people. One might think that UK’s structures are a little inefficient but when visiting a supermarket, one gets a little surprised by the self-checkouts replacing 10 cashiers with one guy who is taking care if anyone needs help in the checkout process. Funfact #3: Whereas all UK is using pound sterling currency, scottish bank notes are hardly accepted within Britain. They say this is because for some reason, they’re not sure if this is real money or just a fake. So you’re much better off to spend all your notes in Scotland than trying to do so in Britain.
